PABM a Platform to Internationalise The Malay Language
PABM a Platform to Internationalise The Malay Language

Putrajaya, Malaysia - The International Malay Elocution Contest (PABM) can be a form of internationalising the Malay language, apart from elevating it on the world stage, the Prime Ministerís wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor said today.

She said the contest would also enable the language to be "exported" and developed through formal channels at major learning institutions abroad.

"It can also create awareness, as well as build confidence among the Malays, that Malay is still a dominant and relevant language, regardless where and in what situation," she said at a reception with participants of the contest here.

Rosmah said efforts to make Malay accepted as an official language at regional and international conferences should be encouraged.

"Such efforts will make Malay an influential language in contributing to the formation of the world civilisation and towards building of quality human capital with strong personality," she added.

The contest, where participants will vie for the Prime Ministerís Trophy, is organised by the Higher education Ministry. It will be held from Feb 19 to 22 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

A total of 79 students from 74 countries, including Japan, Russia, Australia, France, South Africa, Sudan, South Korea, United States of America, Nepal and China, are taking part in the contest.
